St. Peter’s College is a private, coeducational Roman Catholic college, located in Jersey City, which is the seat of Hudson County, in New Jersey, USA. During the 2007 census, Jersey City’s population was estimated at a number of more than 242,300 inhabitants, growing from a number of 240,000, estimated during the 2000 census, fact which makes it the 2nd largest city in New Jersey, after Newark.
St. Peter’s College was founded by the Society of Jesus, in 1872. During World War I, in 1918, the college was closed, along with several other Jesuit colleges and high schools, and it was not re-opened until 1930. Today, it is one of 28 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, and offers more than 33 majors to over 500 graduate and 3 200 undergraduate students.
The college’s athletic teams are known as the Peacocks, who compete in the MAAC, in various sports, including in baseball, soccer and softball. The Peacocks have won the MAAC conference men’s basketball championship, and the accompanying automatic bid to the NCAA tournament twice, also having 12 appearances in the NIT, between ’57 and ’89, winning seven MAAC championships and automatic bids to the NCAA tournament, in women’s basketball, from ’82 to ‘2002, as well.
